Why origami?

Why origami?

A little blog from Claire about the inspiration behind some of our favourite products!

I have a very distinct memory of receiving a lovely, folded letter when I was travelling across Australia, way back in 1999. It was sent by a school friend, as light as an airmail letter (and similar in design because it folded into itself to create its own envelope) yet exquisitely printed.

I remember the paper, the illustrated design, and the happiness and comfort I felt receiving something so heartfelt and personal while I was living far from home. What an amazing thing – that made it all the way to Australia without a blemish – and what a lovely gesture from a friend back at home.

Fast forward to 2017 and I was getting married. I’d read about the lovely tradition of creating 1,000 origami cranes as a sign of good luck for the happy couple. I loved this idea and had the thought of creating a backdrop for our ceremony, which was being held in France. Here was a beautiful (and lightweight!) idea representing love and care, which brought a little something extra to our special day. So, Mum and I set to work making cranes in a rainbow of colours. As the wedding got closer, family and friends helped us to fold them so that my husband and I had a little gesture of luck and well wishes from everyone we love. We incorporated other origami elements into our wedding - including our invitations, which folded out to reveal the venue information.

Jenny and I have always loved tactile stationery – whether it’s the design, the feel of the pages, clever packaging ideas – it’s all part of the pleasure of choosing a new item. So when we created Jack & Orla, we knew we wanted to incorporate that element into our collection.

Origami was the perfect fit for us and we’ve used it in many of our designs – from limited edition Mother’s Day cards, to our ever-popular origami notelet and bookmark sets.

Rather like that airmail letter years ago, each of our origami notelet folds up beautifully to create its own envelope, ready to pop into the post. We’ve picked paper stock that makes writing a dream, and we’ve included all the little touches you need - a little label to fasten each notelet, a set of instructions – and gorgeous packaging.

Our brand new origami corner bookmarks are super cute; we’ve carefully selected every detail here too – a silky smooth paper stock, vibrant prints, and four collections to choose from. We’re on a mission to save your books from folded down pages - and make reading extra JOyful!
